Mabel
Aku Baneseh, a reporter with state-owned Daily Graphic has been adjudged the
Ghana Journalist of the Year 2013 at the 19th Ghana Journalists Association
(GJA) Awards. A visibly shocked Baneseh, who has specialized in court
reporting, had earlier grabbed two honours at the event on Crime/Court
Reporting and Political Reporting. Receiving the ultimate prize at the
three-hour event that is aimed at recognizing members of the umbrella body of
Ghanaian journalists, the mother of two said she is “overwhelmed” because it
has been “a long journey” and sometimes “difficult”. She was full of praise for
her husband who has “been supportive” in taking care of their kids anytime she
has to stay late at the work place to finish with her stories. The Asantehene
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was the special guest of honour. Other dignitaries at the
ceremony were Dr. Sam Jonah, a former member of the Council of State and past
GJA president Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie and the Minister of Communications Dr. Omane
Boamah, who represented President John Dramani Mahama. Various categories of awards
were given to deserving journalists in the country.
