Residents of Tamale rejects names named after streets

Barely two days after the commencement of the physical implementation of the Street Naming and Property address system by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, concerns have being raised over some of the names. Some residents are of the view that some of the names shouldn’t have been named after streets in the metropolis since according to them they are not northern-related.  Some of these names include Tufour street, Nyaniba street among other non-northern-related names named after streets in the metropolis. This is however raising eye browses within some prominent individuals in the metropolis. But responding to the concerns, the Public affairs Director of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Issah Musah Salifu says the assembly will examine the concerns if they are valid concerns the assembly will duly address them. He stated that Tamale is a subset of Ghana which is not an island and residents should not see themselves operating outside the enclaves of Ghana. The Street Naming and Property address exercise seeks among other things to provide the platform for proper identification of all physical structures for effective revenue mobilization and collection. Meanwhile, critics also say the Tamale Metro Assembly is in a rushed to implement the exercise since according to them the assembly is not fully prepared and is doing so under duress because the president has given an ultimatum for all MMDAs across the country to meet a deadline.   Their claims are being juxtaposed by wrong spelling of some of the names coupled with minor hitches confronting the exercise which skeptics say shouldn’t have occurred if the assembly is fully prepared for the exercise.
