of people have been rendered homeless in the Central Gonja District capital, Buipe
as a result of torrential downpour that hit the area in the early hours of Tuesday.
Hundred of houses and schools including the district police station have been
submerged as well. Buipe, the district capital of central gonja has been noted
for its perennial flooding in the northern region. Narrating the incident to Fiila
News reporter Saaka Alhassan, the District Chief Executive for the area, Mumuni
Shiraz Ibn Yacin says the two-hour heavy down pour which accompanied with storm
rendered several people homeless. The DCE attributed the incident to the
attitude of residents building structures on water ways coupled with dumping of
refuses in gutters indiscriminately. Mr. Shiraz Ibn Yacin stated that his
outfit has always sensitized residents to desist from building on water ways
but his pleas have not yielded results. According to him, the Assembly is
considering taken stiffer punishment against persons who disregards directive to
prevent disasters in the area. The DCE however revealed that no casualty has
been recorded and his outfit is still assessing the extent of damage caused.
Mr. Shiraz Ibn Yacin therefore appealed to residents in the area to avoid
building on water ways to help curtail the perennial flooding in the area.
