Heavy rains submerge parts of Tamale

Some residents in the Tamale Township are stuck indoors after a heavy downpour on Friday dawn caused devastating floods in some parts of the metropolis and the Sagnarigu districts in the Northern Region. The rain which started around 3:30 am lasted for about four hours. So far, no death or serious injuries have been recorded but some mud houses on water ways have been submerged. The worse affected communities are Gumani, Kanvili, Kalpohin and Koblimahigu. Northern Regional National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Coordinator, Alhaji Abdulai Silimboma blamed the perennial flooding in the area on people who have built on waterways. He said: “No amount of relief items will change the situation if people fail to heed to NADMO’s advice not to build on water ways or to relocate to upland areas. District Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, Alhassan Mohammed Sorigudoo in an interview said his administration is currently struggling to provide relief items for victims of earlier floods which caused havoc in the area.
