The Municipal Chief Executive for Savelugu/Nanton, Hon. Abdulai Alhassan
Red, has attributed the poor sanitation condition in the area to lack of
adherence to calls for change of attitude by residents. The
MCE also hinted about a periodic clean up exercise to be rolled out by the
assembly, to involve community members in the fight against poor sanitation in
the municipality. Speaking on Sanitation on Might Morning Show with Shaibu
Awudu, the MCE bemoaned the low level of income generation by the assembly,
citing the lack of cooperation by community members especially those involved
in various trades. He said the Assembly has the requisite human resource to offer
various solutions to the sanitation problems confronting the Municipality but
the implementation of the recommendations sometimes becomes difficult with the
level of income being generated by the assembly. Mr. Alhassan Red said in the
medium to long term, the Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Assembly as part of the
government’s efforts to ensure people pay enough for development in their
communities, is involved in the street naming exercise which will make it
easier to identify structures within the municipality, thereby, getting them to
pay in terms of strength for the development of the municipality beginning with
sanitation. The Programmes Manager for the WuniZaligu Development Association, Mr.
Karim Ziblim, outlined various business ideas assemblies could put together to
generate income from feacal matter, citing the collaboration with the Private
Sector and Civil Society to make this a reality. He said feacal matter could be
passed through a process with some additives to produce compost which will be
useful to farmers.
