Awareness creation
has become a major tool to dealing with the current outbreak of the Ebola Virus which has become the greatest health concerns to the world in recent
times. The
deadly disease which is seen to be a threat to human survival has already
claimed over two thousand lives in the West African sub-region including
Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Nigeria. Though not recorded in
Ghana yet, the government of Ghana is not taking any chances and has through
the Health
Ministry taken a number of measures to deal with any recorded case. As such the
Talensi District Assembly in collaboration with the Talensi District Health
Directorate also complimented government efforts by embarking on district wide
sensitization campaign on the disease to educate people on precautionary
measures to avoid the disease and how to identify it. Speaking to
Ghanadistricts.com, District Chief Executive for the area, Edward Awunnore said
that while the Ebola virus may be contagious disease, it is however one that
requires directs contact,
adding that it can be transmitted to humans through the bites of animals that
are reservoirs for the virus such as monkeys and fruit bats. She noted it can
however be transmitted by exposure to the excretion, blood or other bodily
fluids of these reservoirs animals which can include dogs. He therefore urged
the people to practice regular hand washing with soap and running water, avoid
contact with body fluid and other things that could place them at risk for
contracting the virus. In a related development, the assembly has sensitized
residents living along the White Volta to move to higher grounds as they pick
signals that the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso would soon be opened. This will
prevent loss of lives and properties in the event the dam is opened, the DCE
added.
