NHIA embarks on free mass registration in Tamale



The National Health Insurance Authority in the Northern Region has instituted a free mass registration exercise geared at giving opportunity to the vulnerable in all electoral areas in the Tamale Metropolis to be registered to access free and quality health care. Under the program about 54,000 persons will be covered while existing members will also enjoy free card renewal. The free registration exercise will be extended to Orphanages, Schools under the school feeding program as well as helpless students at the senior High school level. Patrick Kuagbenu is the Tamale Metropolitan Scheme Manager for the NHIS.  It is estimated that more than 18,000 vulnerable residents in the Tamale metropolis under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) will be registered under the National Health Insurance Authority free mass registration exercise. The National Social Protection Strategy Policy is aimed at strengthening and improving the poverty level of the rural communities by providing cash, quality education and health insurance to the extremely poor households in the country. However, the Mayor of Tamale, Abdul-Hanan Gundadow expressed satisfaction about the exercise and noted that there is the need for it to be done periodical to improve equal access to quality healthcare. Meanwhile the Mayor urged rural women to take advantage of the exercise to renew their wards card for free.
