The
District Chief Executive for Sagnarigu has called on Ghanaians to eschew
practices that could lead to the outbreak of disasters. He also urged
Ghanaians to change their attitude towards the environment to minimize the
occurrence of disasters. Mr. Alhassan Mohammed Sorugudoo made these call during
the celebration of the World Disaster Risk Reduction Day at Sagnarigu. World
Disaster Risk Reduction day is observed worldwide on the 13th of October every
year. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly to raise
awareness about the importance of Disaster reduction and to encourage every
citizen and government to take part in building more disaster-resilient communities
and nations. This year, the focus of the World Disaster Risk Reduction Day is
on older people, including their needs and what they contribute to better
planning and understanding of disaster risk in their communities. As part of activities to mark the
celebration, NADMO and the Sagnarigu district assembly led by the DCE
planted trees at some schools in the district to serve as windbreak for public buildings
in the area. He noted that the district is already known to be a flooded prone area
hence the need for the residents to embark on the tree planting to help
mitigate some of the adverse effect that comes in the absence of tree. Mr.
Sorugudoo also made a passionate appeal to residents in the district to support
the assembly in addressing the sanitation issues in the district. He charged
residents to stop littering the environment to help curtail disease such as
cholera and other sanitation related diseases.
