The
traditional head of Bunbong-Naayili, a farming community in the Yendi
Municipality of the Northern Region has bemoaned the increasing rate at which
some chiefs are actively participating in partisan politics. According to Ubor
Dawuni Wumbei, the nation’s chieftaincy institution is fast losing its
significance in the scheme of national affairs because some chiefs have allowed
politicians to manipulate them. Ubor Dawuni Wumbei is convinced traditional
rulers can do better by not allowing political office seekers to use them as
conduit to win general elections. The respected traditional head raised this
concern in an exclusive interview with Citi News at the 2014 Linujil (Yam
Festival) celebrated by the chiefs and people of Bunbong-Naayili on the theme,
“Unity and Development.” He maintained that traditional rulers should stay
neutral in partisan politics to maintain their dignity. Ubor Dawuni Wumbei
further admonished his colleagues to stop overly depending on successive
governments and initiate self help programmes to improve the living conditions
of their subjects. He advocated the need for chiefs to serve the interest of
their subjects by holding politicians accountable for their stewardship. He
therefore called on all in the Northern Region to be law abiding and embrace
peace for sustainable development in their localities. Ubor Dawuni Wumbei and
his subjects have initiated moves to build a Senior High School in the
community. They have also advanced plans to set up an education endowment fund
to assist needy but brilliant pupils in Bunbong-Naayili and its satellite
communities. He urged parents to invest in their children’s education. Ubor
Dawuni Wumbei is an entrepreneur and senior brother of Ghana’s internationally
acclaimed Reggae star, Rocky Dawuni. Even though Bunbong-Naayili is one of the
major yam producing communities in Ghana, half of the population there are
living in abject poverty.
