NGO promotes gender equality

Executive Director of the Northern Sector Action on Awareness Centre (NORSAAC), Alhassan Mohammed Awal has called for an end to outmoded customary practices which contribute to social and economic marginalization of young females in society. With emphasis on Northern Ghana where social exclusion of women in decision making is pervasive, he said NORSAAC would not give up its desire to nurture young females to assume their rightful positions in life. Alhassan Mohammed Awal spoke to Citi News on the sidelines at the launch of a project christened, “Young Female Parliamentarians Project. With funding from Action Aid Ghana, he said the project aimed at improving the capacity of young females to assume key leadership positions in their schools, communities, regional and national levels. According to him, NORSAAC is collaborating with key stakeholders in the education sector to build the capacity of young females to aspire to be Parliamentarians. He believed NORSAAC could boast of hundreds of young females who have taken advantage of the project since its inception in 2010 to nurture their ambitions. Alhassan Mohammed Awal disclosed that majority of the beneficiaries were occupying important positions at their work places. He encouraged participants at the launch to brighten their future by placing premium on the project in their respective localities. He said that over 650 girls in some selected schools in the Northern Region will receive direct support from the two organizations.  The event attracted district Directors of education, head teachers of second cycle institutions and some female students. Alhassan Mohammed Awal therefore called for the collective efforts of parents and other major stakeholders in the education sector to make the project a success.
