The
Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
has settled on December 13, 2014 to organize the party’s national delegates’
congress. The congress which will allow delegates’ of the party to elect new
national executives will take place in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. The
Committee made this decision at a crunch meeting at the party’s headquarters in
Accra on Tuesday. The congress was originally scheduled to take place on
October 25, but it was postponed due to a court case brought against the party
executives by an aggrieved member. The aggrieved member, Njonolah Linus dragged
the NDC and its executives to court for allegedly overstaying
their mandated tenure of office. Most of the regional elections of the NDC
were also rocked by series of court cases, but over the weekend, the party was
able to complete all outstanding regional congresses. Per the party’s calendar,
regional elections are to be completed before the national congress. As a
result, the various court cases contributed to the delay in the organization of
the national congress. The new congress date will thus enable the NDC open up
nominations for persons aspiring to contest the various national executive
positions. Currently, some of the aspirants are vigorously campaigning although
officially, none of them have filed their nominations.
