The Minster of employment
and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu has called on the striking Ghanaian
workers of MODEC to call off their ongoing strike. The call was made by the
Minister in a closed door meeting with the leadership of the union of the
striking workers and the General Transport Petroleum and chemical Workers
Union. However, the meeting is expected to continue tomorrow with all parties
involved in the matter including management of MODEC. General Secretary of the
workers union, Iddrissu Fuseini told Citi
News they may adhere to the Minister’s directive after duly consulting
with their members. MODEC dismissed some of its Ghanaian workers
for failing to sign a bond to be of good behavior after negotiations over pay
disparity failed. The remaining 12 Ghanaians working with MODEC, on November 11 also laid down their tools to
demand the reinstatement of their colleagues that were sacked. Meanwhile
workers in the petroleum sector on Tuesday also followed suit in solidarity with the
dismissed MODEC workers. Meanwhile, workers of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) as well
as Bulk Oil Storage & Transportation Co. Ltd. (BOST) are currently on
strike. According to Fuseini,
workers of the Tema oil refinery (TOR) have all joined in the strike adding
that tanker drivers are not also loading their trucks.
