Gub-Katimali bemoans neglects of mental ill patients

The programme Coordinator of Gub-Katimali Society in the Northern region has bemoaned the rate at which persons with mental illness and epilepsy are being neglected in the society. Sheikh Yakubu Abdul- Kareem said the neglect of mental ill patients includes government since they have no budget allocation and infrastructure from government. According to the programme Coordinator of the Gub-Katimali Society, the neglect of mental ill patients is due to their low contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.  Sheikh Yakubu Abdul- Kareem said this during a sensitization forum for stakeholders including the various security agencies on the implementation of the mental health bill in the northern region.  In 2012, the mental health Act received Presidential assent and became a law after being passed by the Parliament of the republic of Ghana. It thus ushered in a new dawn of hope for people with mental illness and introduce a new ideal to which mental health service or care givers were aspire to. Despite the law in place metal ill patients still undergoes all kind of neglect, stigmatization and brutalities from families, community members as well as traditional healers which however needs much to be desired. Sheikh Abdul- Kareem said Gub-Katimali Society and its partners Basic-Needs targeted the security agencies because they protect laws in the country hence the need for them to be sensitize on the new laws on Mental Health.
