The
Sector Commander at the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)
William H O Annan has urged the media to partner with the authority to educate
the public on the customs procedures, rules and regulation. He said the Customs division of the GRA sees
it necessary to inform and educate journalists who are the mouthpiece of the
voiceless transfer the information to the general public on the activities of
the organization as well as clearing some doubts about customs procedures. He
believed this will empower journalists to understand and be able to
explain to the general public who seek information about Customs from their
media houses. William Annan said this during a one day seminar on customs
procedures, rules and regulation with Journalists in Tamale. The workshop is
among series of sensitization workshop to be organize for the media is to equip
and deepen the knowledge of media personnel to enable them disseminate clued-up stories to the public concerning the
authority. Touching on challenges that affect the work of the Customs, he
bemoaned the lack of personnel in the division. He indicated that Northern
region is a wide place where more personnel are needed to make the workforce
active. Acting assistant commissioner of communication and public affairs at
GRA, Robert Mensah who took participants through the Customs guidelines
and procedures advised tax payers to always ask for receipts after paying their
taxes both postal and removal articles. He encouraged journalists and the
general public to file complaints considering Customs for further
investigations. Robert Mensah also urged individuals who smuggle motor bikes
into the region to desist from such act as they will not favour anybody when
caught.
