Lawyer wins N/R NDC Secretary position

Tamale based legal practitioner, Lawyer Halid Rauf is now the governing National Democratic Congress' (NDC) Northern Regional Secretary. He was overwhelmingly elected by 239 delegates at the end of the regional Secretary election held in Tamale yesterday. One of the contenders, Abdulai Jabayiti polled 47 votes against the incumbent regional Secretary, Alhaji Umar Yussif Alhassan, who secured 32 votes. Lawyer Halid Rauf until his elevation was the NDC deputy Northern Regional Secretary. The Electoral Commission boycotted the poll because of an impending litigation at a Tamale High Court. One of the disqualified aspirants vying for the Secretary position, Mohammed Aliu alias One man, secured an interlocutory injunction on the election. In a related development, Godfred A. Wumbei was sworn into office as the NDC Northern Regional Organizer. He secured 196 votes at an earlier regional conference held in Tamale. But his results were annulled by the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, following a petition filed by one of the defeated aspirants, Abubakari Mumuni. Prior to his swearing in, Godfred A. Wumbei and his campaign Manager, Abubakari Arafat Zakariah were arrested and detained by Tamale police for allegedly assaulting the Northern regional Minister in his office on Friday evening. The incumbent regional Treasurer, Rashid Tanko alias computer stood unopposed.
