Gov’t denies using pension fund to buy Merchant Bank

Government has rejected claims that the tier two pension contributions of public service workers were used to purchase distressed Merchant Bank. The Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu alleged that funds used by Fortiz to purchase Merchant Bank were taken from the tier two pension funds. Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said government was only deceiving workers and “bidding for time” as it solicits for funds elsewhere to replace the tier two pension funds. But addressing a press conference today, Communications Minister, Dr Omane Boamah, denied the accusation, insisting the funds were safe at the Bank of Ghana. The Minister challenged persons spreading such false claims to “boldly step forward to contradict their position.” Twelve labour unions are on an indefinite strike to protest government’s failure to pay public service workers, their tier two pension funds into a private account. The Minister clarified that “the funds that have accrued are being safely kept by the Bank of Ghana and have been prudently invested for the benefit of pensioners”. Meanwhile, the Minority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has said he will make his findings over the matter public soon.
