The
Tamale Metropolitan Assembly is considering inviting Private Public Partnership
(PPP) into the construction of public toilets to help ease the burden on the
purse of the assembly. The Private Public Partnership will also allow the
assembly to divert resources that would have been used in the construction of
the toilets to other projects vital to the livelihoods of the people of the
metropolitan area. The mayor of the Tamale metropolis, Abdul-Hanan Rahman
Gundado revealed this during a sod cutting ceremony for the construction of 21
public toilets in some selected second cycle institutions and communities
within the metropolis. Mr. Gundado also announced the assembly plans to assist
unwilling landlords to construct toilets in household without toilets
facilities. According to him, the assembly will take 30 percent of the cost
which will be repaid to set as a revolving fund for other households to also
benefit. The Tamale metropolitan assembly is anticipating that by 2016 the
Tamale metropolis should be the first city in the country to put a stop to open
defecation. The project is funded by the Alliance Français De Develop moiré
which is a partnership between the government of France and Ghana through the
Ghana Urban Management Pilot Programme (GUMPP). Construction work will commence
middle of next month.
