Tamale Metro Assembly invests in education

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has doubled its efforts to overturn the falling standard of education in the area. The assembly is constructing new classroom blocks and teacher bungalows especially in remote areas to improve the education sector. Tamale Mayor, Abdul Hanan Gundado says the Assembly’s vision is to make quality education delivery accessible to all children of school going age. Abdul Hanan Gundado implied that education remained one of the Assembly’s top most priorities. He described formal education as the panacea to reducing poverty in the Tamale Metro area. According to him, the Assembly has also deepened its collaboration with the Metro Education Directorate to intensify monitoring and supervision of teachers. Mr. Gundado lamented despite the large numbers of teachers in the metropolis, effective teaching and learning is not being undertaken in the classrooms.

Armed robbery and other crimes surge in the two bulsa districts.

The District Security Council, DISEC, of the Bulsa North District Assembly in the Upper East Region, has petitioned the Interior Ministry to intervene in the fight against the high incidences of armed robbery and other related crimes which have assumed alarming rate in the area. In a letter dates 10th July, 2014, signed by the District Chief Executive , Hon. Bonaventure Adangabey, addressed to the Regional Minister and copied to the Interior Minister and the Upper East Regional Police Commander, the DISEC, recounted that, “indeed, not long ago, there was a reported case of armed robbery at Kashisa, a village near Fumbisi under the Bulsa South District, where a young man in his thirties from Sandema, who was returning from Fumbisi Market on a motor bike, was attacked, robbed off his money and killed. According to the letter, the incident had the potential to endanger the relative peace and security in the District. “The DISEC therefore met on Tuesday 4th February 2014 and discussed the issue thoroughly following which a number of measures on how to arrest the situation were adopted” it added. “These include the erection of a police barrier on the road at Gbedema; linking the Bulsa North and South Districts, as well as supporting the police with fuel to enable them intensify their patrol activities across the two Districts, especially on Sandema and Fumbisi market days”. The letter revealed. The petition however accused the District Police Commander for failing to implement other decisions at curbing the setback. The petition conclude that, “since the phenomenon of armed robbery appears to be on the ascendency in the two Districts and our efforts to comprehensively deal with it is not yielding the desired impact, the DISEC meeting on 3rd July. 2014, decided that the issue be referred to the Regional Security Council for its intervention and necessary action.

“Save a Watt campaign” launched in Tamale

As the government of Ghana is putting in more efforts to conserve energy, the energy commission of Ghana has brought together stakeholders in the Tamale metropolis to educate them on how to conserve energy in the country. The program which was dubbed “Save a watt campaign” is to be launched in all regional capitals to sensitize Ghanaians on the need to conserve energy. About 30 percent of Ghanaians are said to be leaving in darkness making live much difficult, hence reducing productivity. According to the Public Relations Manager of Energy Commission Mr. Victor Owusu, the campaign is aimed ensuring effective utilization of electricity by consumers to save energy and money. He advised Ghanaians to always switch off their electrical gadgets when leaving home to reduce energy consumed to save the huge sums channeled into producing power in the country. Mr. Victor also urged Ghanaians to take advantage of the ongoing exchange exercise of old refrigerators to the energy efficient ones. This he said will save over 1000 megawatt of power in the country. Students were brought from various schools to serve as ambassadors in their homes to educate their parents as well inculcate in them how to conserve energy. The Deputy Northern Regional Minister Alhaji ABA Fuseini asked Ghanaians to be more conscious on how to use and conserve energy to help decrease the frequent power outages in the country.

EC opens 41 registration centres in Tamale Metro

The Electoral Commission’s 10 days limited registration exercise is taking place at 41 centres in the Tamale Metro Area. The centres include, Vitting Local Authority primary, Pagazaa/Tugu, Choggu AME Zion, Wamale/Zoo community Junior High School, Dabokpa Junior High School, Kootingli Presby primary and Kukuo AME Zion Junior High School. The Tamale Metro EC Director, Andani Naatogmah Issah in an interview said each registration centre will have six officials. Two officers will be responsible for registration, two officers will serve as data entry clerks, one officer will be in charge of special duties and a laminator. The officer in charge of special duties will serve as liaison between the EC Metro office and the registration centre. Regional executives of all the political parties in the region have put in place local mechanisms to keenly monitor the 10 days exercise. But press visit to some of the centres saw only two party officials present representing the governing NDC and the Opposition NPP. Some Tamale residents expressed their worry about low publicity on the exercise as a result of the change of the EC’s calendar in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling on using the National Health Insurance Card as permissible document to participate in the exercise.
