Deputy Education Minister says government
never promised to build 50 community Senior High School
(SHS) schools every year. Rather, the Deputy Minister said what they promised
in 2012 was to build 200 SHS schools by the end of 2016. As part of efforts to
improve access, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the round up to the
2012 elections promised to build 200 schools, 50 in
each year. Due to this, the Finance Minister, Seth Terkper announced in
Parliament while delivering the 2013 budget statement that government has
allocated funding for the construction of 50 SHS schools. This was contained in
paragraph 465 of the 2013 budget statement. But a year on, the Deputy Education
Minister on Asempa FM’s almost swore government never made such promise. He was
convinced because government promised to build 200 schools in four years, some
media analyst assumed it will build 50 every year. Okudzeto Ablakwa said
considering the 18 months construction period given to constructors, it will be
impossible to build 50 schools in the year. He however revealed the first 50
school is near completion.
