MP says Ghana's security crumbling under severe debt

A Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North and Deputy Ranking Member for Defense and Interior Committee has said Ghana's security institutions are crumbling under severe debts. Major Rtd Derrick Oduro who was stopped from raising the issues on the floor of Parliament due to the likely security implications told Joy News' the indebtedness of Ghana's security institutions are matters of public record. Speaker Edward Doe Adjaho told the member that issues about Ghana's security were not to be discussed in public. He advised members to be circumspect in their discussion on issues relating to the budget. But the MP disagreed. He said the security institutions are facing a lot of challenges which are no different from the ones being experienced in other key sectors of the country. According to him, contractors who performed services to the security services have not been paid. He said the country's immigration personnel are having difficulties performing their duties because they lack the logistical support and that is quite dangerous as the country readies to battle smuggling. The Defense Minister, Benjamin Kunbuor is reported to have said that the challenges being faced are normal, assuring that government is working tirelessly to resolve them.
