The
sanitation situation at Tishegu and Salamba, all suburbs of the Tamale
metropolis is very poor. Residents in these communities seem not to understand
the need to keep their surroundings clean since they still throw rubbish
indiscriminately. In the unlikely event of an outbreak of cholera residents in
these areas could be seriously affected. Other communities noted to be untidy
are Nyohini, Gumbihini and Warizehi.
Residents of these communities still engaged in open defecation. In the
maiden edition of the “Naming and Shaming of Untidy Communities” in the
metropolitan area, Fiila News observed that Tishegu and Salamba are the
dirtiest communities in the city despite being situated in the central business
district. The “Naming and Shaming of Untidy Communities” is an initiative by
management of Fiila FM to deter communities from keeping their communities
untidy. This is to complement government and the Metropolitan Assembly’s
efforts to regain the faded glory of the city as being the cleanest city in the
country some years ago. The initiative is also to ensure that community members
take responsibility of the filth they generate. Tisehegu and Salamba are the
birth places and are currently housing the mayor of Tamale as well as the Head
of Department of Dagbanli at Fiila FM here and other influential persons and
yet they still say no to “clean environment”.
It was disheartening that residents of Warizehi reluctantly sat at the
recent National Sanitation Day watching the Northern Regional Minister and the
Mayor of Tamale cleaning their own surroundings. At Tishegu people are found
feasting by choked gutters without taking into consideration the health
hazards. Cleaning one’s environment is not just the health impact but rather
enhance the proximity to God.
