Increase MPs to 400 - IEA proposes

A Ghanaian policy think tank, Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), has proposed that the country caps its parliamentary seats at 400. The world’s second largest cocoa-producer currently has 275 seats in Parliament. The IEA made the suggestion for an additional 125 seats after its ‘Winner-Takes-All’ Advisory Committee’s nationwide consultation exercise. Committee Member, Emile Short, said there should be an affirmative action system where the additional seats will be reserved for marginalized groups such as women and persons with disabilities. Just before the Ghana's 2012 general elections, its Electoral Commission carved out 75 additional seats to bring the number to the current 275. That exercise sparked accusations of gerrymandering against the governing National Democratic Congress.

2016 not a time for experiments" - Dr. Bawumia

The 2012 vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says 2016 is not the time for the party to experiment with a new candidate as the consequences for such an action will be dire. Addressing NPP delegates at the Assembly Hall of the Bolgatanga Secondary Technical School, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the NPP is on course to win the 2016 election with Nana Akufo-Addo as the presidential candidate of the Party. Touching on the incompetence of John Mahama, Dr. Bawumia indicated that the ruling National Democratic Congress has so far proven itself to be a government that "creates problems, instead of solving problems. According to Dr. Bawumia, the NDC has always found money for schemes such as SADA, SUBAH and GYEEDA. However, when it comes to finding money for teachers to buy chalk, teachers and nurses allowances, paying of contractors, the GETFund, District Assemblies Common Fund, the government retorts by saying "there is no money. He revealed that interest payments on Ghana's debt in 2014 alone is four times Ghana's oil revenue, adding that "they have destroyed Ghana's oil. Dr. Bawumia asked the delegates gathered, to give NPP the chance to lead the country come 2016 general elections.
